The Insurance Services Office Public Protection Classification rating is used by insurance companies in marketing, underwriting, and to help establish fair premiums for homeowners and commercial fire insurance (ISO, 2012). ISO has demonstrated a distinct relationship between excellent fire protection and low fire losses in a community.

In August 2012 representatives from the ISO surveyed our community with Fire, Water and Dispatch officials to complete the evaluation. When evaluating a fire department’s ability to respond to and mitigate fire emergencies in a community the ISO looks at three main areas. ISO assigns levels of credits to each evaluation criteria in developing the final PPC.

The Insurance Services Office (ISO) is the regulatory agency which sets fire insurance rates for communities.  Communities are rated on a scale of 1 to 10, with 1 being the best rating a community could obtain, 10 being the worst.  The city of Woodbranch Village currently has an ISO rating of a class of 2, with all areas outside of the city limits having a split class rating of 4/8B.

  • With a split Class 4/8B, all class-rated properties located within 1000 feet of a fire hydrant and within 5 miles of a fire station will use Class 8.
  • All class-rated properties located farther than 1000 feet of a fire hydrant and within 5 miles of a fire station will use Class 8/B.
  • All property located farther than 5 miles of a fire station regardless of a water supply, will be a Class 10.
